Following an extensive multi-day search of Lake Erie, the Conneaut Police Department confirmed the recovery of the body of 10-year-old Hunter Ebie on Tuesday. The department expressed deep sadness and requested thoughts and prayers for Hunter's family at this difficult time.
According to the police, Hunter Ebie was swept away by a strong rip current while visiting Conneaut Township Park with his mother and a friend. The GoFundMe account organized by a family friend revealed that the boy was carried away in front of his family, with his mother making a harrowing effort to save him.
The family's statement, obtained by FOX 8, described Hunter as a caring and loving kid, emphasizing the need for more life preservers, awareness of rip tides, and knowledge about the strength of these waters to prevent further tragedies. They urged for increased measures to ensure the safety of individuals in such waters, expressing their enduring love and sorrow for Hunter.
National Weather Service Warning
Prior to the tragic incident, the National Weather Service had issued a warning about rip currents, advising swimmers to avoid entering the water. Additionally, the NWS provided essential guidance for individuals caught in rip currents, including not fighting the current, swimming out of the current, and calling for assistance if needed.
