The operation, named "Smoke Jumpers," resulted in 13 seizures, including fentanyl pills and other drugs. Nine defendants were arrested, with seven additional suspects believed to be in Mexico. The FBI is seeking out the fugitives who were indicted on drug smuggling-related charges. Five of the suspects taken into custody have pleaded guilty and are expected to stand trial in April. If convicted, the defendants could face mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years in federal prison. The FBI led the investigation, supported by various federal, state, and local agencies.
