33 Arrested in Anti-Israel Encampment Clearing at George Washington University

Mayor Bowser and Police Chief Smith reported 33 arrests at an anti-Israel encampment at George Washington University.

On May 8, 2024, a peaceful protest organized by anti-Israel demonstrators in George Washington University turned out to be volatile and unstable, resulting in 33 arrests made by the Metropolitan Police Department. The protest, which initially started peacefully, took a drastic turn, prompting law enforcement to intervene.

Arrested Protester Vows Movement's Strength

Following the dismantling of the encampment, one of the arrested protesters, identified as Nora, expressed defiance and determination during a press conference. She declared that despite the arrests and police intervention, the movement is "stronger than ever." Nora voiced the movement's refusal to succumb to escalation and emphasized that their energy has rebounded tenfold.

She further reiterated their unwavering focus on the struggles in Palestine and Gaza, emphasizing that the movement would not be derailed by the recent arrests. Despite the challenges posed by law enforcement, Nora adamantly stated that they will not allow the system to oppress them and instead will persevere in their cause.

Police Intervention and Arrests

Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith explained that the decision to intervene and make arrests was prompted by the escalating nature of the protest. The demonstration showed signs of potential violence and instability, leading to concerns over the gathering of offensive and defensive weapons.

After multiple warnings to disperse, the police took action, resulting in arrests for charges including unlawful entry and assault on a police officer. The decision to intervene was made in consultation with Mayor Muriel Bowser, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for law enforcement involvement.
