The earthquake struck the South Pacific Island nation, with its epicenter located 110 kilometers (68 miles) southeast of the West New Britain provincial capital Kimbe. The seismic event occurred at a depth of 68 kilometers (42 miles), shaking the region shortly before 7 a.m. local time (21:00 GMT).

No Tsunami Alert

Following the earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that there was no threat of a tsunami. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also stated that there was no alert for a potential tsunami.
