Renowned British conductor Andrew Davis, who served as the music director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and orchestras across three continents, has passed away at the age of 80.
Illness and Passing
Andrew Davis passed away on Saturday at the Rusk Institute in Chicago due to leukemia. His manager, Jonathan Brill of Opus 3 Artists, confirmed his passing on Sunday. Davis had been battling the disease for approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years, but it took a turn for the worse shortly after he celebrated his 80th birthday on February 2nd.
Notable Positions
Davis held prestigious positions throughout his career, serving as the music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1975 to 1988, as well as at Britain's Glyndebourne Festival from 1988 to 2000. Additionally, he was the chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 2000 and then served as the music director of the Lyric Opera from 2000 to 2021.
His contributions extended beyond his official roles, as he also conducted the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America in workshops last summer, with performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and during a tour.
