Advocates Push for Dedicated Busway to Improve Crosstown Transit in New York City

New Yorkers advocate for a dedicated busway on 42nd Street to improve crosstown transit, inspired by successful projects in the city.

Navigating through New York City can present significant challenges for its residents. There is a growing demand for the city to consider implementing a busway along one of its most congested crosstown routes.

The Crosstown Corridor

Manhattan’s 42nd Street is not only a popular destination but also an area that many prefer to avoid, depending on their plans. Despite its connection to the busiest subway station, the crosstown bus often moves at a snail's pace along this route. Although there is a dedicated bus lane in each direction, commuters are advocating for a dedicated busway to prioritize bus travel.

Existing Busway and Potential Improvements

Manhattan already has a busway along 14th Street, from Third Avenue to Ninth Avenue, which operates as "local access" between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. This system has allowed for improved bus travel times and has been well-received by the public.

Efforts and Challenges

The initiative to enhance crosstown public transit aims to alleviate traffic congestion. However, some drivers blame lane changes for the increased traffic. Despite this, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has developed a comprehensive network of dedicated bus lanes, with plans for future crosstown projects on 34th Street and 96th Street in Manhattan.

Proposed Projects

The NYC DOT has released a report titled "Connecting to the Core," outlining various proposals to improve bus travel. Some of these include working with the community to expedite bus movement on 34th Street, establishing bus priority on Hillside Avenue, Richmond Avenue, and other locations in Staten Island, Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

The NYC DOT has expressed its commitment to continuing outreach for newly proposed bus projects in different parts of the city. Furthermore, bus lane enforcement remains a priority for the city and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group, has launched “The Miracle on 42nd Street” campaign to encourage individuals to engage with the New York City Council and the mayor’s office to support the implementation of a dedicated busway. The need for improved public transportation in New York City is essential to enhance mobility and reduce traffic congestion.
