Air Turbulence: A Growing Concern for Injuries and Fatalities on Flights

Turbulence can lead to serious injuries during flights. From 2009 to 2022, 163 people were seriously hurt in the US.

Over the past decade, the aviation industry has been grappling with a concerning issue - turbulence. This daunting phenomenon has left many travelers grappling with fear and physical harm during their flights. From 2009 to 2022, a harrowing 163 passengers and crew members aboard U.S. registered aircraft suffered serious injuries due to turbulence, as revealed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Tragic Incidents

Despite being an uncommon occurrence, turbulence-related fatalities are a grim reality. In a tragic incident on Tuesday, a 73-year-old man lost his life when a plane en route from London to Singapore suddenly descended 6,000 feet in a matter of minutes after encountering severe turbulence. This calamity also resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized, while an additional 12 were undergoing treatment for their injuries, as reported by Singapore Airlines.

Ongoing Concerns

Recent years have witnessed several other distressing incidents. In March 2023, a Lufthansa flight from Texas to Frankfurt experienced severe turbulence, leading to the hospitalization of seven passengers with minor injuries. Likewise, in December 2022, roughly two dozen individuals, including an infant, sustained injuries on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu due to rough air encountered just before landing.

These incidents underscore the imperative need for heightened awareness and measures to mitigate the risks posed by turbulence, ensuring the safety and well-being of air travelers.
