Alexander Stubb Wins Finland's Presidential Election Runoff

Former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb emerged victorious in Finland's presidential election runoff, narrowly defeating former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in a closely-fought race. Stubb, representing the center-right conservative National Coalition Party, secured 51.6% of the votes, while independent candidate Haavisto garnered 48.4% after over 99% of votes were tallied.

Stubb's Victory and Political Background

The win propels the 55-year-old Stubb, a seasoned politician who previously held the premiership between 2014 and 2015, into the role of the 13th president of Finland since the nation gained independence from the Russian empire in 1917. The election runoff was necessary as none of the initial nine candidates obtained more than half of the votes in the first round on January 28.

The runoff on Sunday concluded with Stubb's victory, and Haavisto conceded defeat following a projection by the Finnish public broadcaster YLE. The election, which saw over 4 million eligible voters participating, aimed to select a successor to President Sauli Niinistö, whose second six-year term expires in March.

Stubb, a former lawmaker at the European Parliament who has also served as Finland's foreign, finance, and European affairs minister, will now assume responsibility for steering the Nordic country's foreign and security policy in the wake of its NATO membership, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
