Reports from Washington reveal that hackers based in Russia are being accused of orchestrating a complex cyber campaign aimed at American intelligence officials and contractors from the State and Defense Departments. According to the Justice Department, this operation was part of a broader effort to target Western countries. The alleged spear phishing campaign, which took place between October 2016 and October 2022, specifically targeted current and former U.S. intelligence community employees, defense contractors, and Energy Department facilities. The indictment, unsealed in California, implicates Ruslan Aleksandrovich Peretyatko and Andrey Stanislavovich Korinets, who are affiliated with a group known as the Callisto Group, in using fake email accounts to deceive victims into divulging their login credentials. The two individuals are facing charges of conspiracy to commit offenses against the U.S. and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Furthermore, investigators have stated that the alleged Russian hacking campaign also targeted researchers and journalists in the United Kingdom and other Western nations. The Justice Department has unequivocally attributed responsibility to the Russian government for these activities. Both suspects are currently sought by the FBI and are believed to be located in Russia.
