Ambitious Project Proposes New City in California

A group supported by influential tech billionaires has disclosed plans to establish a new city in California on a portion of rural land they acquired in Solano County. The proposed development aims to create a community with a pedestrian-friendly layout, incorporating a mixture of medium-density apartments and townhouses. However, the project faces opposition from the public and must comply with existing county regulations, which would require voter approval to proceed. The company, known as California Forever, has presented proposals to address concerns raised during public consultations, including the commitment to reserve land near Travis Air Force Base and the pledge to generate employment opportunities. Additionally, the project aims to fulfill water requirements and contribute to the expansion of access roads. The city is envisioned to comprise walkable streets and primarily feature attached apartments and townhomes. To progress, the organizers must gather a substantial number of signatures to place the proposal on the county's ballots in November. The group's CEO, Jan Sramek, and a consortium of wealthy Silicon Valley investors are backing the venture. If approved, the construction of essential infrastructure could commence as early as 2026.
