American Dad Detained in Turks and Caicos for Ammo Possession: An Honest Mistake with Severe Consequences

Pennsylvania father detained in Turks and Caicos for illegal ammo possession faces 12-year prison sentence, claims unintended consequences of island law.

Following an 'Honest Mistake', Bryan Hagerich, a 39-year-old father from Pennsylvania, is facing a minimum 12-year prison sentence in Turks and Caicos after ammunition was found in his checked bag while attempting to depart from the Caribbean island.

Unintended Consequences of Island Law

Hagerich appeared in court in Turks and Caicos, where a judge stated that he must remain on the islands for another three weeks until his sentencing. He recounted the situation, expressing that his family was abruptly separated without an opportunity to explain the circumstances, leaving them completely unaware of the events to come.

Different Laws in Turks and Caicos

While the TSA requires ammunition to be in a secure case in checked luggage, Turks and Caicos laws have a different stance on this matter. The U.S. Embassy in Nassau has also issued a travel alert emphasizing the strict enforcement of firearms-and-ammunition-related laws in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), with a minimum custodial sentence of twelve years for violating these laws.

Strict Legislation and Unintended Consequences

Hagerich expressed understanding and respect for the island's efforts to combat violence and gun trafficking but highlighted the unintended consequences of a one-size-fits-all approach in the law. He emphasized that he and the other detained individuals are not a threat to the island or its people, stating that they are good, loving human beings who simply made a mistake.

Other Individuals Detained

Three other Americans are awaiting their own sentencing for similar issues. Tyler Wenrich, a 31-year-old father from Virginia, was allowed to return home last week after posting bail, while Ryan Watson of Oklahoma, a father of two, remains on the island after being arrested for unknowingly having ammunition in his bag.

Legal Proceedings

Another American, Michael Lee Evans, 72, has pleaded guilty to carrying ammunition in his bag, with his sentencing hearing scheduled for June 18. Additionally, four other detained Americans have had their cases adjudicated and were ordered to pay fines, while one received an eight-month prison sentence.
