Apple Pauses $552 Million Campus Development in North Carolina, Seeks Construction Timeline Extension

Apple has paused $552 million campus development in Research Triangle Park, seeking construction timeline extension in North Carolina.

Apple has announced that it will be pausing the development of its $552 million campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The company has requested a four-year extension on its incentive deal with the state, and if granted, Apple will not receive state incentive benefits during this time.

Despite the delay in campus development, Apple emphasized its commitment to expanding in the Raleigh area. Since April 2021, the tech giant has added approximately 600 positions in the region. The company's hiring obligations include adding at least 126 local workers by the end of the year, with a target of reaching 378 total positions by the end of 2024.

Construction Plans and Timeline

Apple's initial commitment to invest at least $500 million in building the new campus by the end of 2031 remains unfulfilled, with no construction having begun as of now. The proposed site plans for the campus include three office buildings, three accessory buildings, and a parking garage, totaling nearly 900,000 square feet on either side of N.C. 540.

State Incentives and Future Prospects

Apple will only be eligible for North Carolina's job development investment grant, valued at up to $845 million in payroll tax benefits through 2061, if it meets specific annual hiring and investment targets. Despite the pause in campus development, Governor Roy Cooper expressed confidence in Apple's future in the Triangle and its commitment to building the transformative campus in North Carolina.

Presently, Apple leases office space at the MetLife campus in Cary. Additionally, the company has acquired a four-story, 139,000-square-foot building in Durham near the RDU airport.
