181 Arrested in Major Blow to Reorganized Cosa Nostra

Italian police arrested 181 suspected Cosa Nostra members in Sicily, dealing a blow to the mafia despite its efforts to modernize and engage in new criminal ventures like online gambling.

Italian authorities delivered a significant blow to the Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia, with the arrest of 181 individuals on Tuesday. The operation, dubbed an “important blow” by officials, targeted members of the criminal organization believed to have orchestrated a resurgence in recent years.

According to Domenico La Padula, a lieutenant colonel with the Carabinieri police who led the investigation, Cosa Nostra is far from eradicated despite years of relentless pursuit by prosecutors and police raids. The investigation revealed that the group has undergone a transformation, reorganizing and finding renewed strength through new recruits and a unified focus on lucrative criminal ventures, including online gambling.

A Modernized Mafia

While adhering to its traditional roots and rituals, Cosa Nostra has embraced modern methods to operate with increased efficiency. The Carabinieri stated that the organization remains “strongly tied to the rules of its founding fathers and its ancient rituals” while simultaneously utilizing encrypted smartphones to minimize the need for conventional meetings and gatherings. This adaptation allows them to conduct business discreetly and evade traditional surveillance methods.

Operation Unfolds

The arrests, which culminated after two years of meticulous investigations, were executed across Palermo, the Sicilian capital, and its surrounding towns. Over 1,200 Carabinieri officers participated in the operation, conducting overnight raids that involved hundreds of officers awaiting orders to enter homes while helicopters patrolled the skies above. The charges against those apprehended encompass a wide range of criminal activities, including mafia affiliation, drug trafficking, extortion, and attempted murder.
