Australian Police Arrest Man Over $400,000 Theft of 'Bluey' Commemorative Coins

A man was arrested for stealing 63,000 unreleased "Bluey" coins worth nearly $400,000 in Sydney.

A man has been apprehended in Sydney, Australia, for allegedly stealing a trove of commemorative coins worth around US $400,000 linked to the beloved children's television series "Bluey." The 47-year-old suspect is accused of heisting a staggering 63,000 unreleased, limited-edition Australian $1 coins totaling approximately US $420,000 from a warehouse, with the theft reportedly taking place in June.

The Alleged Heist

The suspect, along with two male accomplices, allegedly pilfered the heavy cargo of coins, collectively weighing over 1,000 lbs, from the back of a truck. The coins, produced by the Australian mint and featuring the lovable character "Bluey," are not just mere novelties but are also legal tender.

These limited-edition coins have become a hot commodity, fetching prices online that are reportedly ten times their face value. The "Bluey" series, one of the most streamed television programs in the United States in the previous year, has a devoted fan base among both children and adults.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Awareness

To address this brazen crime, the Australian police established a special unit called "Strike Force Bandit", actively working to recover the stolen coins and return them to circulation. Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi expressed the importance of these coins to the community, stating, "the theft of these coins has deprived a lot of young children and members of the community from having access to these coins, so we're doing our absolute best to recover these coins and put them back into circulation."

Recovery Efforts

A raid in June on a residence in Sydney resulted in the recovery of 189 stolen coins. However, Superintendent Doueihi noted that a significant number of the stolen coins are already in circulation, and those in possession of them do not need to surrender them to the police.

The arrest marks a significant step in addressing the high-profile theft of these limited-edition "Bluey" coins, with law enforcement determined to recover the stolen assets and restore them to their rightful place in the community.

The police's swift action in apprehending the suspect and their ongoing efforts to recover the offending coins demonstrate their commitment to restoring the community's access to these cherished collectibles.
