Florida man survives Bahamas shark attack by escaping the swarm of 20 sharks after falling into the water. Shark warnings issued for Cape Cod's Memorial Day weekend.

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, experts are issuing a warning about increased shark activity in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The New England Aquarium is urging caution for those heading to the beaches this summer.

Presence of Sharks

John Chisholm, a scientist at the Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, stated that although no white sharks have been spotted this season, they are definitely present in the area. He emphasized the importance of reviewing shark safety guidelines and being cautious.

Incidents of Shark Bites

Reports have surfaced of marine mammals, such as a seal and a minke whale, suffering from shark bites off the Massachusetts coast. Images of a seal with fresh bite marks were captured in Plymouth and a minke whale with a white shark bite was reported off Chatham.

As the summer season commences, it is crucial for beachgoers to be mindful of their surroundings and to report any shark sightings. Experts advise avoiding areas with seals or visible schools of fish, and staying close to shore where emergency responders can easily reach individuals if needed.

According to the New England Aquarium, there are over 15 different shark species inhabiting the waters off the New England coastline. The public is encouraged to report shark sightings and stay updated on shark activity through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity app.
