Baja California Authorities Investigate Shooting Deaths of Three Missing Surfing Tourists

Three bodies found near where missing surfers disappeared likely belong to them, with signs of a deadly robbery. Suspects in custody.

Yesterday, Baja California state prosecutors announced the tragic discovery of three bodies near the location where two Australian surfers and an American went missing. The bodies were found with gunshot wounds in the town of Santa Tomas, Baja California.

While awaiting DNA test results for official confirmation, María Elena Andrade Ramírez, the Baja California state attorney general, stated that there is a high probability the bodies belong to the missing surfers and their friend.

Details of the Discovery

The FBI confirmed the discovery of the bodies, which were found in a well over 50 feet deep in Mexico. Additionally, another body was found in the same well, but authorities do not believe it is related to the missing surfers.

Investigators uncovered several chilling details during their examination of the area where the surfers had been camping. They found tent poles, a cartridge casing, plastic gallon bottles, blood stains, and drag marks.

Motive Behind the Attack

María Elena Andrade Ramírez revealed that it is believed the victims were attacked for their truck. The assailants allegedly intended to steal the foreigners' pickup truck and other parts to use on their own vehicle, which was an older-model pickup.

Authorities have taken Jesús Gerardo, also known as "el Kekas," into custody in connection with the case. Two others are in preventive detention as the investigation continues. While Jesús Gerardo has a criminal record, the authorities have not ruled out the involvement of the other two individuals, a man and a woman, who have not been identified.

Mention of the American Companion

Debra Robinson also mentioned the American companion, named Jack Carter Rhoad, who was with them. However, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has not yet confirmed this information. The U.S. State Department has acknowledged the reports of a missing U.S. citizen in Baja, but has not provided further details at this time.
