Beloved Giraffe Chioke Dies at South Dakota Zoo After Severe Foot Fracture
Beloved 18-year-old giraffe Chioke from Great Plains Zoo dies due to a severe fracture in his front left foot.

The Great Plains Zoo and Butterfly House & Aquarium in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, announced the heartbreaking death of Chioke, an 18-year-old reticulated giraffe. Chioke had to be euthanized due to a severe fracture in his front left foot, as reported in a news release by the zoo.
Life and Legacy
Chioke, born in Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida, made his way to the zoo in 2007, where he stood nearly 15 feet tall and sired three offspring before they were transferred to other zoos. Described as playful and beloved, Chioke leaves behind a legacy of joy and curiosity.
Health Struggles
During his later years, Chioke faced recurring hoof and foot issues, including two fractures to the tip of his toe bone and resulting arthritis. The zoo's efforts to address his health challenges included consulting nationwide for a treatment plan, using drugs, rest, and laser therapy. Unfortunately, his condition took a turn for the worse when he suffered a more serious fracture in March, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize him due to quality-of-life concerns.
Farewell
The zoo staff bid Chioke a heartfelt farewell, feeding him his favorite apple biscuits during their last visit. Remembered as a gentle, curious, and mischievous giraffe, Chioke's endearing nature left a lasting impression on his keepers and guests. The name "Chioke," meaning 'gift from God', aptly describes the impact he had during his time at the zoo.
