Biden Administration plans to reactivate decommissioned nuclear reactors
The Biden administration is exploring plans to restart decommissioned nuclear reactors and expand nuclear power capacity.

The administration led by President Joe Biden is actively engaged in the formulation of strategies to reactivate additional decommissioned nuclear power reactors in response to the escalating demand for emissions-free electricity. These initiatives were highlighted by White House climate advisor Ali Zaidi, who emphasized the urgency of the matter.
Current Projects in Progress
Among the notable efforts already underway are the planned recommissioning of the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan, managed by Holtec, and the potential restart of a unit at Constellation Energy's Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania. It is worth noting that the latter location is historically significant as the site of the most severe nuclear accident in U.S. history.
In response to inquiries about the possibility of reviving additional shuttered plants, Zaidi confirmed that there are tangible efforts underway to explore this avenue. However, he refrained from disclosing specific details about the power plants involved in these considerations.
Multifaceted Strategy to Boost Nuclear Power
At the Reuters Sustainability conference held in New York, Zaidi articulated the three-pronged strategy adopted by President Biden's administration to enhance nuclear power production as a means to combat climate change. This approach encompasses not only the repowering of dormant nuclear plants but also the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) for specific applications and the ongoing research into next-generation advanced nuclear reactors.
One of the bold aspirations voiced by Biden is the ambitious goal of tripling the United States' nuclear power capacity. This objective is intended to meet the surging energy demand, which has been further amplified by the proliferation of power-intensive technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Significant Financial Investments
In a noteworthy financial development, the Biden administration recently announced the closure of a $1.52 billion loan aimed at revitalizing the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan. This endeavor is expected to require two years to reach operational status. Meanwhile, Constellation and Microsoft have entered into a power agreement aimed at facilitating the revival of a unit at the Pennsylvania plant, garnering hopes for potential government support in this endeavor.
Exploring SMR Technology
Zaidi further revealed that the U.S. Navy made a request for information on the construction of SMRs on a half dozen bases. He emphasized that SMR technology is not a distant prospect; rather, it is a viable option that companies in the United States are keen to deploy within this decade.
