Biden and Harris to Assess Hurricane Helene Damage and Recovery Efforts in Affected States
President Biden and Vice President Harris are assessing and addressing the damage caused by Hurricane Helene in the Carolinas and Georgia.

On Wednesday, President Biden will embark on a crucial visit to the Carolinas to assess the extensive destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. He aims to conduct an aerial tour of the affected areas and receive a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing recovery initiatives. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris will be traveling to Georgia to gather updates on the emergency response efforts in the aftermath of the storm.
Following the Path of Destruction
The president's first stop will be in Greenville, South Carolina, where local utility crews and public work teams are diligently working to clear roadways and restore power. Following this, President Biden will proceed with an aerial tour of the hard-hit regions, a method that allows for an understanding of the extensive devastation without hindering recovery operations. Notably, Greenville is located approximately 60 miles south of Asheville, North Carolina, which has been severely impacted by the storm.
In a proactive measure, the White House announced that President Biden has authorized the deployment of 1,000 active-duty U.S. soldiers to assist in delivering essential supplies, including food, water, and other critical commodities to communities affected by Hurricane Helene. This deployment will complement the efforts of over 4,800 federal personnel who have already been dispatched to aid states in the region in responding to the storm.
Humanitarian Crisis and the Search for Survivors
The urgency of the situation is underscored by President Biden's revelation that, as of Monday, 600 individuals were still unaccounted for in the Southeast. Furthermore, the devastating impact of the storm has resulted in at least 175 storm-related fatalities as of Wednesday. In response to this crisis, the president will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to participate in an operational briefing at an emergency operations center.
Despite being spared the worst of the damage from Hurricane Helene, Raleigh is poised to play a pivotal role in coordinating the recovery efforts. On the other hand, the western region of North Carolina, particularly Asheville, bore the brunt of the destruction, with significant portions of highways obliterated and numerous residents deprived of access to running water, a reliable food supply, and other essential needs. The impact of the storm was not confined to North Carolina, as eastern Tennessee also experienced severe damage.
Preserving Recovery Operations
President Biden has consistently expressed his commitment to not impede first responders or disrupt recovery efforts, which explains his delayed visit to the affected areas following the storms. His approach emphasizes the importance of minimizing any potential obstacles to the ongoing humanitarian operations.
