On June 17, a group of migrants allegedly attacked New York City police officers outside a Queens hotel, resulting in the indictment of six suspects on various charges, including attempted assault and attempted gang assault. The incident occurred as the officers were checking on the welfare of three unattended children outside the hotel, which is being used as a shelter.
Charges and Defendants
The six suspects, identified as Juan Munoz, 25; Alejandro Munoz, 42; Karina Navarro-Chavez, 42; Miguel Chiluisa, 23; Cristian Taipe, 30; and Natali Iza, 27, have been charged with attempted assault in the first degree, attempted gang assault in the first and second degrees, and other crimes related to the attack on the NYPD officers. Additionally, Miguel Chiluisa is facing charges of second and third-degree escape, while both Chiluisa and Natali Iza have been charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Assault on Officers
According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, the officers were surrounded, punched, and kicked by the group of adults outside the Long Island City hotel while they were checking on the unattended children at 4:20 a.m. during the incident.
The confrontation escalated as the suspects allegedly started to strike, push, and kick the officers. One of the suspects, Chiluisa, reportedly threw a children's bicycle at an officer, resulting in injuries. Another suspect, Navarro-Chavez, struck an officer on the back of the head with an unknown object.
Following the attack, Chiluisa attempted to escape but was later apprehended inside a subway station. Despite being handcuffed, he managed to flee the scene, eventually being found with a broken handcuff. The injured officers were treated for their injuries, which included shoulder pain and abrasions, at a hospital.
Similar Incidents
The attack on the officers is reminiscent of a previous incident where migrants assaulted NYPD officers in Times Square. In that case, officers attempting to disperse a crowd were subjected to punching and kicking by the migrants.
Response and Prosecution
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz emphasized her office's commitment to vigorously prosecute those who harm members of law enforcement and hold the defendants responsible for their alleged actions.
With this indictment, the legal process will now proceed, addressing the charges brought against the suspects in connection with the assault on the New York City police officers.
