Bombing at Mogadishu Café Kills Five During European Soccer Final

Bombing at café in Mogadishu during soccer final kills 5, injures 20. Al-Shabab suspected. Recent jailbreak and government offensive.

On Sunday, a devastating bombing outside a café in the Somali capital of Mogadishu claimed the lives of at least five people, with an additional 20 individuals sustaining injuries, as confirmed by Major Abdifitah Aden Hassa, spokesman for Somali police. The attack took place while a group of individuals were engrossed in viewing the European soccer final between Spain and England on a screen inside the café. The explosion, caused by a car laden with explosives, led to a fire outside the café, as depicted in images circulated online.

An eyewitness, Ismail Adan, revealed that some spectators incurred injuries while attempting to scale the café's perimeter wall, while others were wounded in a resulting stampede. Most of the casualties were located in the vicinity of the café at the time of the dreadful incident.

Security Situation

Although the responsible party for the attack remains unidentified, it is noteworthy that assaults by the Islamic militant group al-Shabab are frequently recorded in Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia. These attacks persist despite a period of relative peace in Mogadishu, disrupted only recently by an attempted jailbreak at a local prison. The prison breakout resulted in a confrontation between the inmates, convicted for their association with al-Shabab attacks, and prison guards, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals.
