Brothers hailed as heroes for saving 7-year-old drowning in pool
Brothers Weston Woods and Noah Roche heroically saved a drowning child in a Detroit pool.
On Friday, the lifeless body of a 62-year-old man, identified as Mark Ham, was found partly submerged in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in the northern part of Minnesota. Ham, who had been canoeing alone, was discovered by fellow canoeists around 5 p.m. who promptly called 911, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
No Life Jacket Found
It was reported that Ham, who tragically lost his life, was not wearing a life jacket while out on the water. His family informed law enforcement that he had been canoeing by himself, and a life jacket was found at the scene, raising questions about the circumstances of the incident.
Reminder for Water Safety
As the Minnesota fishing season opened last weekend, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Rescue Squad issued a reminder to the public. They emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets while engaging in water-related activities during the summer season. This precautionary measure aims to prevent fatal accidents and ensure the safety of individuals enjoying water recreations.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are actively investigating the tragic death of Mark Ham. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Midwest Medical Examiner's Office are working together to determine the circumstances that led to the incident. The investigation aims to provide clarity regarding the events that led to the unfortunate loss of life.
Regrettably, Ham's death occurred shortly after a 20-year-old man drowned while attempting to save a 23-year-old woman during a hiking trip near Chattanooga, Tennessee, on April 29. These incidents emphasize the need for heightened awareness and safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
Drowning stands as a leading cause of unintentional death, with statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealing that 80% of drowning victims are men. These figures underscore the importance of prioritizing water safety and taking necessary precautions.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area, located approximately 25 miles north of Ely, Minnesota, near the Canadian border, is known for its natural beauty. The serene area is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers seeking to explore the picturesque landscapes.
