BTS Member Jin Discharged from Military, Paving Way for Group Reunion

Jin, the oldest member of the K-pop group BTS, has been discharged from the South Korean army, marking the first step towards the band's eventual reunion.

Completion of Military Service

Jin, whose birth name is Kim Seok-jin, completed his 18-month military service on Wednesday morning, as confirmed by BTS's label. This comes after the announcement in June 2022 that the group would go on hiatus to fulfill their military duties.

Over the next year, the remaining band members are expected to follow suit and fulfill their mandatory military service, in accordance with the requirements for South Korean men.

Debate and Legislation

Prior to Jin's enlistment, there was public debate regarding whether BTS should receive an exemption from the military draft, akin to exemptions granted to Olympic medalists and some classical musicians. While the group did not receive an exemption, lawmakers revised the conscription law days before Jin's 28th birthday, allowing pop artists who have enhanced the nation’s reputation to postpone enlistment for two years.
