California Fines Amazon Nearly $6 Million for Warehouse Quotas Law Violations

California's labor regulator has announced a substantial fine of nearly $6 million against Amazon for numerous violations of a safety law implemented in 2022. This significant fine comes in the wake of the Warehouse Quotas Law, which empowers employees to request written clarifications regarding productivity quotas and disciplinary actions related to these quotas.

Violations and Sanctions

The state labor commissioner's office revealed that Amazon had breached the law over 59,000 times at two of its warehouses in Southern California during the period from October to March. This staggering number of violations has prompted the substantial penalty imposed by the regulator.

Lilia García-Brower, the labor commissioner, stated that the system employed by Amazon in the aforementioned warehouses directly contradicts the principles set forth by the Warehouse Quotas Law. She emphasized that the law was specifically designed to prevent the type of system that Amazon had in place, which led to the widespread violations.
