Governor Newsom deploys 120 CHP officers to Oakland amid rising crime. Murder suspect stabs attorney and prosecutor in Martinez courtroom.

On March 18, 2024, a shocking incident took place at the A.F. Bray Courthouse in Martinez, California, as a murder suspect, identified as 28-year-old Ramello Randle, unleashed a violent attack during his homicide trial. The event unfolded when Randle freed himself from restraints and proceeded to stab his attorney in the face and head with a pen before turning his aggression towards the district attorney.
Details of the Incident
Randle, who was attending the trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in July 2020, managed to break through the restraints that bound him to a courtroom chair. Subsequently, he utilized his defense lawyer's pen to carry out the assault, which was witnessed by the Contra Costa jury tasked with determining his guilt. Additionally, the district attorney involved in the case was also targeted during this violent outburst.
Case Background
Randle is accused of collaborating with another individual, Christopher Slaughter, to carry out the murder of the mother of Randle’s child, 24-year-old Jonaye Lahkel Bridges. The alleged plot involved tracking Bridges’ vehicle, following her to a store, and subsequently perpetrating a fatal attack. While Bridges tragically lost her life in the incident, another individual present was injured but survived.
Legal Proceedings
After the disturbing episode in the courtroom, Randle, the defense attorney, and the district attorney are expected to resume proceedings on the following day. The trial had previously resulted in a mistrial in November 2022 due to Randle’s disruptive behavior, which included hurling expletives at the district attorney during cross-examination.
Subsequent Charges and Judicial Response
As a result of his actions within the courtroom, Randle now faces additional charges including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery. With the case being presided over by Judge John Kennedy, a comprehensive assessment of courtroom violence protocols is underway.
Aftermath and Legal Implications
Following the violent altercation, both attorneys involved declined medical attention despite being assessed by the fire department. This disturbing turn of events has thrust into focus the security measures and protocols within courtrooms, prompting a review of how such instances are managed to ensure the safety of all individuals present.
