Autopsy reports were available for 20 cases, all of which revealed that the patients experienced complications during or after the surgeries. The CDC identified fat embolism as the cause of death for 11 cases, particularly in patients who had undergone liposuction and gluteal fat transfer, commonly referred to as a Brazilian butt lift. Additionally, seven cases resulted in death due to pulmonary venous thromboembolism, a sudden blockage in a lung artery, which is more likely to occur following major surgery, especially in individuals with risk factors such as obesity or undergoing multiple procedures concurrently.
