China to restrict exports of aerospace components and technologies to safeguard national security

China will restrict exports of aviation and aerospace components from July 1 to safeguard national security and fulfill international obligations.

China has declared the imposition of restrictions on the exports of specific aviation and aerospace components and technologies initiating from July 1. These measures are stated to be essential for "safeguarding national security." The Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs, along with the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission, have jointly issued a notice concerning this.

The new regulations are being introduced to provide enhanced protection to national security and to fulfill international obligations like non-proliferation. As per a statement released by a spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce, the exports of various items such as equipment, software, and technologies associated with aerospace structural components, engine manufacturing, and gas turbine production will necessitate export licenses.

Justification for Regulations

The spokesperson emphasized that implementing export controls on specific molds, special fiber materials, and related items is an international practice. They further clarified that these regulations are not targeted at any particular country or region. The official statement highlighted Beijing's opposition to the utilization of controlled items from China by any country or region for activities that could undermine China's national sovereignty, security, and development.

It is pertinent to note that both China and the U.S. have previously announced export restrictions, including those related to technology, equipment, and materials crucial for national security. Following these developments, the Ministry of Commerce in China has levied sanctions against Boeing and two other defense companies for their involvement in arms sales to Taiwan.
