China warns Philippines against provocative actions in South China Sea, vows to safeguard sovereignty

China's defence ministry issued a strong warning to the Philippines on Sunday, following an incident in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. The ministry cautioned the Philippines against "provocative" actions and reiterated China's commitment to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty.

Warning Against Intensification of Conflicts

The defence ministry's statement specifically urged the Philippines to refrain from making remarks that could escalate conflicts and worsen the situation. It also demanded that all infringing and provocative actions be ceased immediately.

Commitment to Territorial Sovereignty

The ministry further emphasized that if the Philippines continued to challenge China's bottom line, China would take firm and decisive measures to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.

Response to Philippine Allegations

These remarks came in response to allegations made by the Philippines regarding an incident near the Second Thomas Shoal and Spratly Islands. China's coast guard reportedly took measures against Philippine vessels, leading to criticisms from the Philippines, which described the actions as "irresponsible and provocative."

Notably, the Philippine task force on the South China Sea stated that the incident involved the use of water cannons against a civilian boat hired to resupply troops.

The situation in the South China Sea continues to be a point of contention between the two nations, with both sides asserting their respective claims in the region.
