Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Boaters off California Coast Amid Ongoing Recovery Efforts
The Coast Guard has suspended the search for four missing boaters in Northern California after a boat capsized, with one child rescued and a teen found dead.

In a tragic incident off the coast of Northern California, the U.S. Coast Guard has suspended an extensive search for four individuals who went missing after their boat capsized over the weekend. The search was initiated after a report was made regarding a 21-foot vessel carrying three adults and three children, which failed to return to shore in Sonoma County, north of San Francisco.
On Sunday, search crews made a significant discovery when they located an 11-year-old boy alive along South Salmon Creek Beach, north of Bodega Bay. The boy was wearing a vest and was subsequently taken to a hospital for stabilization. During the interview with first responders, he revealed that the boat had capsized, as reported by Deputy Rob Dillion, a spokesman with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
Discovery of the Teenager's Body
Shortly after rescuing the boy, searchers located the body of a teenager in the water. This revelation added to the grief surrounding the incident, as the identities of the missing individuals and the circumstances leading to the tragic event began to unfold.
Details of the Boat Trip
The ill-fated vessel, a blue and white Bayliner, had departed from Bodega Bay at 3 p.m. on Saturday, coinciding with the commencement of the recreational Dungeness crab season. A family, along with a friend, had set out for a fishing expedition, with the expectation of returning to shore by 7 p.m. However, when the group failed to arrive as scheduled, concern grew among family members. Resorting to formal channels, a family member promptly contacted the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, which subsequently notified the Coast Guard.
Suspension of Search Efforts
The search operation involved collaboration among eight local, state, and federal agencies. However, despite the significant efforts deployed, spanning an extensive area of over 2,100 square miles, the search efforts were suspended on Sunday evening. U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Michael L. Zapawa emphasized the challenging nature of such decisions and expressed sympathy for the families of the missing boaters during this challenging time.
As the community grapples with the emotional toll of this incident, the prospect of resuming the search operations remains contingent upon the emergence of new information that could potentially guide authorities in narrowing down the search parameters.
