Colorado Latinos Prioritize Immigration Reform, Medicaid Protection

A recent non-partisan poll sheds light on the pressing concerns of Colorado Latinos, revealing their perspectives on crucial issues such as immigration and healthcare. Conducted by BSP Research, the poll, commissioned by Voces Unidas and the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR), captured the sentiments of 1,700 Latinos across the state between July 10 and August 6.

Immigration Impacts: A Top Concern

Immigration reform and the protection of immigrants emerged as a top priority for many Colorado Latinos. The poll found that one in five surveyed individuals emphasized immigration as a key concern, particularly in light of the Trump administration's policies aimed at increasing deportations and enhancing collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The survey revealed a significant level of distrust among Colorado Latinos regarding the sharing of data with ICE. By a 53 to 47 margin, respondents expressed concerns that state government agencies might share sensitive information with federal immigration authorities, despite existing state laws prohibiting such cooperation. This sentiment extended to local police, with 54 percent of respondents fearing data sharing with ICE at the local level.

Gabriel Sanchez, who led the poll for BSP Research, highlighted the strong opposition among Colorado Latinos to government agencies volunteering identifiable data about immigrant children. He noted that only 39 percent supported sharing such information with the Trump administration and ICE, underscoring a deep-seated desire to protect vulnerable populations from potential harm.

Furthermore, the poll indicated that a majority of respondents (56-44) believed that ICE agents should not be permitted to operate while concealing their identities. A resounding 84 percent emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in law enforcement, advocating for officers to always identify themselves, wear body cameras, drive clearly marked vehicles, and treat all individuals with dignity and respect.

The poll also revealed a reluctance among Colorado Latinos to support broad immigration enforcement measures. Only 38 percent agreed that ICE should have the authority to stop anyone suspected of being undocumented, reflecting a recognition that such practices can lead to racial profiling and unwarranted detention.

Health System Challenges: A Looming Crisis

The poll underscored the critical importance of healthcare access and affordability for Colorado Latinos. With a third of insured Latinos relying on Medicaid, the potential impact of cuts to this essential program is deeply concerning. Four in ten respondents indicated that they would be forced to skip or delay treatments if they lost health coverage, highlighting the precarious nature of their healthcare access.

The poll revealed a chilling reality: 40 percent of respondents said they could not afford out-of-pocket medical costs and/or life-saving medications. Moreover, 30 percent reported that they would likely face debt or collections as a result of healthcare expenses. These findings paint a stark picture of the financial strain that many Colorado Latinos experience due to healthcare costs.

Dusti Gurule, President and CEO of COLOR, emphasized the far-reaching consequences of health cuts on individuals and communities. She noted that the inability to access healthcare can disrupt employment, lead to housing insecurity, and exacerbate existing inequalities. The looming budget deficit in Colorado threatens to worsen these challenges, as lawmakers grapple with the difficult task of balancing essential services with fiscal constraints.

The poll's findings serve as a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need to address the healthcare needs of Colorado Latinos. It underscores the importance of protecting existing safety net programs, expanding access to affordable care, and ensuring that all Coloradans have the opportunity to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
