Conscripts in Ukraine Prepare for Gruelling Combat in Donbas Frontline
Gennady Daskal, a former abattoir worker, is now training for the brutal Donbas frontline, facing high casualty rates and manpower shortages.

In a country torn apart by conflict, Gennady Daskal, a 27-year-old former abattoir worker, has been conscripted into a rookie infantry assault unit, preparing to face the brutal reality of the Donbas frontline. This article delves into the devastating impact of the war on Ukraine's soldiers and their families.
Gennady Daskal, known by his callsign Pitbull, has traded killing pigs and cows in an abattoir for wielding rifles and grenade launchers on the battlefield. The Donbas frontline, often referred to as the “meatgrinder,” has already claimed the lives of numerous soldiers, leaving families devastated and communities shattered.
The Harsh Realities
The odds are stacked against soldiers like Mr. Daskal, with casualty rates soaring as high as 70 per cent dead or wounded in frontline infantry units. The conflict shows no signs of abating, as Russia escalates its campaign and extends the battlefield to new frontlines.
Amidst the ongoing turmoil, Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, recently visited Kyiv to demonstrate unwavering American support. Following nine months of political deadlock, the US finally approved a $60 billion aid package to assist Ukraine in its struggle against the relentless aggression.
Shortage of Soldiers and Weapons
Ukraine faces a critical shortage of soldiers and weaponry, further exacerbating the challenges on the front lines. With forces stretched thin and reserves depleted, the country has resorted to stringent mobilisation measures, increasing penalties for draft dodgers and lowering the draft age to 25.
The battleground around Chasiv Yar has become a harrowing arena, where trench warfare collides with 21st-century drone technology. Both sides heavily rely on first-person-view (FPV) drones, unleashing a new dimension of warfare that poses significant challenges to the Ukrainian troops.
