Dallas Police Assure Immigrant Communities of Protection Amid Deportation Concerns
The Dallas Police Department will not assist federal immigration authorities in deportations and assures immigrant communities of protection.

Dallas Police Department (DPD) is making a conscious effort to reach out to its immigrant communities in light of the current deportation raids and arrests taking place under the Trump administration. The DPD has organized a series of meetings to alleviate fears among immigrant residents and provide assurance that the department will not participate in any deportation efforts.
Dallas police won't join ICE deportation raids
As part of its commitment to transparency and support, the DPD has scheduled a minimum of five outreach meetings, with the first meeting taking place on a Wednesday and continuing until Feb. 20. These meetings aim to engage directly with the immigrant communities and provide them with the necessary information and reassurances regarding the department's stance on deportation raids.
During the outreach meetings, DPD Interim Chief Michael Igo addressed the concerns of immigrant residents, specifically emphasizing that the department will not assist the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in its deportation efforts. Chief Igo affirmed that the DPD will not report or turn in individuals who are in the country illegally if they seek help by calling 911 or if they are stopped for traffic violations.
Chief Igo reassured the immigrant community that the DPD remains committed to serving and protecting all residents of Dallas, regardless of their immigration status. He urged community members to continue calling the police when needed, to feel safe going about their daily lives, and to send their children to school without fear of deportation.
Non-Compliance with Federal Immigration Officials
The DPD's stance on non-compliance with federal immigration officials was further echoed by Chief Igo in a post on X, where he expressed a commitment to serving and protecting all Dallas residents. This message of support for the immigrant community was reinforced by the Chief's previous statements emphasizing equal treatment for all residents, regardless of immigration status.
Chief Igo's public statements come at a time when the Trump administration's immigration policies are facing widespread criticism and legal challenges. The newly appointed attorney general, Pam Bondi, has initiated a lawsuit against the state of New York and its government officials, alleging failure to comply with federal law by providing sanctuary to illegal immigrants. This political landscape adds further significance to the DPD's stance on non-cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Impact on Crime Rates
Despite the political and social challenges, Dallas has consistently shown a decline in violent crime rates, as reported by the DPD. In 2024, the city witnessed an 8.2% decrease in violent crime, including a notable 26% reduction in murders compared to the previous year. These statistics highlight the efforts made by theDallas Police Department to create a safer environment for all residents, regardless of their immigration status.
