Dangerous Surf at China Walls & Spitting Caves: New Video Shows Deadly Risks

As summer approaches, popular spots along the east side of Maunalua Bay, such as the Spitting Caves and China Walls, attract many young people and visitors seeking ocean adventures. However, these scenic areas also pose significant dangers, prompting frequent rescue needed operations by first responders.

Statistics from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) paint a stark picture of the risks involved in jumping into the water at these locations. Last year alone, HFD responded to 16 incidents at China Walls and four at Spitting Caves. This year, as of May 1st, the numbers have already reached six responses for China Walls and two for Spitting Caves.

A History of Rescues and Fatalities

News reports over the years are filled with accounts of rescues, fatalities, and warnings about the hazards present at these sites. Last month, a 20-year-old man was rescued after jumping into approximately 50 feet of water, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the currents. Tragically, in February, a 28-year-old man drowned at Spitting Caves, serving as a grim reminder of the potential consequences.

Officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), renowned watermen with firsthand experience, regularly witness the risks associated with these areas while on patrol. A new safety video, filmed during a particularly high-surf day, dramatically showcases how easy it is to drown when caught in strong currents.

The Power of the Ocean

In the video, DOCARE Lt. Vance Lime emphasizes the swiftness and power of the ocean, stating, “Once they panic here, they’re pushed off the point and this current line here will take them all the way to Diamond Head.” He further underscores that even experienced swimmers can be overcome by the waves, as evidenced by past incidents resulting in injuries and fatalities.

The danger posed by strong currents and unpredictable wave patterns necessitates careful consideration and adherence to safety guidelines.
