Dartmouth College Suspends Two Greek Organizations After Student's Drowning Incident

Dartmouth College suspended two Greek organizations due to their involvement in a student's drowning after an off-campus party.

In response to the tragic death of a student due to a drowning incident following an off-campus party, Dartmouth College has taken disciplinary action against two Greek organizations. The incident claimed the life of 20-year-old Won Jang, a student from Middletown, Delaware, who was reported missing in July after attending the party.

Charges Against Greek Organizations

Following the disheartening event, the police in Hanover, New Hampshire, have announced charges against Alpha Phi sorority for one count of facilitating an underage alcohol house. Additionally, two members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity have been charged with providing alcohol to a person under 21. It has been revealed that the ill-fated party was hosted by Alpha Phi, with alcohol supplied by Beta Alpha Omega. The majority of the attendees at the party were underage. Subsequently, towards the conclusion of the gathering, several partygoers made the decision to swim in the river. Unfortunately, a heavy rainstorm struck, causing most individuals to leave the area. Tragically, Jang, whose family informed authorities that he could not swim, was left behind and met with a fatal outcome.

Ongoing Suspensions

In the wake of the incident, Dartmouth College swiftly suspended both the Alpha Phi sorority and the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, with the suspensions still in effect. It is worth noting that Jang was a member of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity. In a statement, the college emphasized its commitment to the contributions of Greek organizations to the student experience, provided they operate in alignment with their stated values and standards. Furthermore, the college underscored the responsibility of these organizations, along with all Dartmouth students and community members, to ensure the maintenance of a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive environment for all.
