Democrats Meet with Haiti's Prime Minister to Discuss Additional American Assistance
Top Democrats in Congress pledge assistance to Haiti's new prime minister, emphasizing critical need for infrastructure funding and services.

Top Democrats in Congress convened with Haiti’s recently appointed prime minister, Garry Conille, to explore avenues for increased American support. The meeting comes just days after a U.S.-backed international police mission landed in Haiti to restore stability to a nation besieged by criminal gangs for several months.
Financial Backing and Opposition
The Biden administration is preparing to allocate $100 million for the mission, with the United States being the primary financial supporter, despite opposition from the Republican party. However, Prime Minister Conille conveyed to the Democrats that a larger sum would be necessary in the near future.
Urgent Need for Funds
During his discussions with lawmakers and officials at international financial institutions, Mr. Conille emphasized the critical nature of the situation and the urgent requirement for sustained investment. He stressed the need for swift implementation of basic infrastructure, repair of essential facilities, and the provision of vital services to the people.
“I need to have the funding necessary to quickly implement basic infrastructure, repair basic infrastructure, and make sure that the services are available to people,” he emphasized in an interview following the meetings.
