The spokesperson indicated that the city is exploring various buildings that could serve as emergency shelters for newcomers. This potential repurposing aligns with the city's status as a sanctuary city where immigration law enforcement is not practiced and cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents is minimal. The city is reportedly considering the vacant elementary school building as a temporary shelter for newcomers, although no decisions have been made and no contracts signed at this stage. It was also noted that the migrant shelter proposition has yet to be met with official determination from Denver Public Schools, the owners of the vacant building.
