Diesel the Donkey Finds Freedom Running with Elk Herd in California Wilderness
Diesel, a donkey from California, left his owners and joined an elk herd, finding freedom and purpose in the wilderness.

April 20, 2019, was a fateful day for Diesel, a donkey who embarked on an unexpected and extraordinary journey that has captured the attention of millions. Recently, a video of Diesel roaming the California wilderness as a fully integrated member of an elk herd has gone viral. The footage, captured by a hunter, shows Diesel running, trotting, and moving in synchrony with his elegant elk companions. This surprising alliance has garnered approximately 3.2 million views in just three months since it was posted, as reported by KOVR.
Diesel's Beginnings with the Drewrys
The story of Diesel's transformation from a domesticated pet to a wild companion began when Terrie and Dave Drewry welcomed him into their family in November 2018. The Drewrys acquired Diesel through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's wild horse and burro program. Initially, Diesel was intended to assist Dave, an avid backpacker, in carrying gear during wilderness treks. Despite his initial reserve, Diesel eventually formed a deep bond with the Drewrys and became an inseparable part of their lives.
A Heartbreaking Separation
Tragically, Diesel's idyllic life with the Drewrys took a tumultuous turn when he fled in 2019, prompting a frantic search that yielded no results. After months of relentless efforts and unsuccessful attempts to locate Diesel, the Drewrys were resigned to the idea that they would never see him again. It seemed as though Diesel had vanished without a trace, leaving them shattered and despondent.
The Remarkable Reunion
Against all odds, in 2021, the Drewrys received a surprising call from a wildlife biologist who reported seeing a donkey running with an elk herd. Despite initial futile attempts, subsequent sightings and videos eventually led to the undeniable confirmation that Diesel, once believed to be lost forever, was indeed alive and thriving in the company of elk.
Diesel's New Life
While the Drewrys express a desire to have Diesel back as a pet, they acknowledge that his wild nature and the strong bond he has formed with the elk make it unfeasible to reclaim him. They find solace in the knowledge that Diesel has found a sense of belonging and purpose among his unconventional companions. Even though he is no longer with them, Terrie Drewry emphasizes that Diesel's return to the wild aligns with his true nature and where he belongs.
Diesel's captivating journey serves as a testament to his resilience and adaptability. Despite the sorrow and uncertainty that marked his initial disappearance, Diesel has not only survived but also thrived in his new environment, establishing himself as an honorary member of an elk herd, embodying the remarkable and unpredictable course of life.
