Tensions have escalated between Iran and Russia after Iran took issue with a joint statement released by Moscow and several Arab countries regarding disputed islands in the Persian Gulf. The statement, issued at the 6th Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum, called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Iran and the United Arab Emirates over the islands. In response, Iran summoned Russia's charge d'affaires to deliver a note of protest. This action came after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian expressed to his Russian counterpart the importance of respecting sovereignty and integrity in international relations.
This is not the first time Iran has voiced its objections to Russian comments on the disputed islands. Earlier this year, the Iranian government summoned the Russian ambassador over a similar statement. The islands in question - Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb, and the Lesser Tunb - have been a point of contention between Iran and the UAE since the British withdrawal in 1971. Iran maintains control over the islands, referring to them as an "inseparable" part of its territory, while the UAE also asserts its claim.
The islands are strategically located at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil supply. Both Iran and the UAE have historical and territorial claims over the islands, adding complexity to the dispute.
