Dive Boat Captain Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for California Fire Tragedy
Captain Boylan sentenced to 4 years in prison for neglect of duty leading to the deaths of 33 passengers and a crew member in 2019 boat fire.
Following a tragic incident in 2019, the captain of a dive boat that caught fire off the coast of Southern California has been sentenced to four years in prison. The incident resulted in the loss of 33 passengers and a crew member. A federal jury reached a verdict in November, finding the captain, Jerry Nehl Boylan, guilty of misconduct or neglect of ship officer, also known as “seaman’s manslaughter.” This led to his sentencing to four years in prison.
The tragedy occurred on September 2, 2019, when the fire broke out in the early hours while the ship, named Conception, was anchored near Santa Cruz Island. Captain Boylan, along with four crew members, managed to escape the fire. However, the 33 passengers who were sleeping below deck, as well as one crew member, lost their lives in the tragic event.
Sentencing
During the sentencing, emotional testimony from relatives of the victims was presented. Prosecutors highlighted that Mr. Boylan failed to attempt to save the passengers and crew members, leading to the tragic loss of lives. As a result, the sentencing of the captain serves as a reminder of the responsibilities of ship officers and the severe consequences of neglect in ensuring the safety of all individuals on board. The incident has deeply impacted the families of the victims and serves as a cautionary tale for the maritime industry as a whole.
