Florida Man Arrested and Charged in Toddler's Murder
On March 5, a Florida man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the tragic death of a 23-month-old toddler he was babysitting. The man, identified as 20-year-old Bobby Curry, was taking care of the child while the mother was at work.
Unresponsive Child Found
Officers were dispatched to a residence on Kansas Avenue at 5:25 p.m. on March 5, after receiving reports of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, they discovered the 23-month-old, named Ezekiel Cotto Saint Fleur, on the floor of the bathroom, unresponsive and without a pulse. Despite immediate CPR efforts, the child did not survive the critical injuries and passed away on March 8.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Curry, who was living with the child's mother, was alone with the toddler at the time of the incident. Although he was not the child's biological father, he was responsible for the child's care. Curry alleged that the child sustained injuries when one of the puppies in the household leaped onto Ezekiel as he was being taken out of the bath, causing him to fall and hit his head on the bathtub and the floor. However, medical professionals found the injuries to be consistent with physical abuse rather than an accident.
Delayed Response and Arrest
Instead of immediately calling 911 when the child was in distress, Curry reportedly messaged the child's mother on Instagram about the severe difficulties the child was facing. The exchange of 67 messages ensued before the mother instructed him to call emergency services. Subsequently, Curry was arrested for first-degree murder and child abuse, with the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office attributing the cause of death to blunt-force trauma.
Chief's Response and Remarks
Lakeland Police Chief Sammy Taylor expressed his dismay at the delay in seeking medical assistance for the child, emphasizing the severity of the situation and the necessity of prompt action in such circumstances. He also voiced his belief that the injuries sustained by the child were not accidental, pointing to the need for responsibility and care when entrusted with the well-being of others.
Conclusion
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of immediate action and responsible care for the safety and well-being of children. It also highlights the consequences of neglect and the necessity of swift intervention in cases of distress and injury.
