Driver's Attempt to Evade Closed Road Ends in Fiery Crash in Oregon

Oregon authorities recently reported an incident in which a motorist attempted to bypass a closed road caused by a landslide, resulting in a fiery crash. The Tillamook County sheriff’s office disclosed that the driver removed a barricade and road closure sign before driving “directly” into a large hole on Sandlake Road.
Details of the Incident
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies and emergency crews found the car upside down and on fire in the hole at 8:22 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21. The occupants had already fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities' Response
Deputy Ben Berger emphasized the ongoing issue of people removing barriers and driving on the closed portion of the road, stating, “Obviously it is extremely dangerous.”
After the crash, the owner of the car reported it as stolen, claiming it had been taken from their home about 5 miles away earlier that morning, deputies said. An investigation into the crash and the reported theft is currently underway, and anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 503-815-3392.
Community Reaction and Road Restoration
The sheriff’s office's Facebook post regarding the incident drew attention, with one commenter expressing disbelief, stating, “Isn’t this so crazy.”
A contractor is slated to commence work on the road on January 29, as per the release. Public works officials have urged the public to cease removing barricades and signs. The road is anticipated to reopen by the end of March.
Cautionary Reminder
Tillamook County is located approximately 70 miles west of Portland, and this incident serves as a cautionary reminder of the risks associated with disregarding road closures and safety measures.
