Effort to Oust Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos Reaches Milestone

Effort to recall Wisconsin Speaker Robin Vos gains enough signatures. Supporters demand new representation. Vos dismisses attempt, questions signatures.

Following a recent announcement on Sunday, backers of an initiative aiming to remove Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos from office due to his stance against former President Donald Trump revealed that they have amassed enough signatures to trigger a recall vote.

Sufficient Signatures Gathered

Supporters of the recall campaign stated that they intend to submit the signatures to the Wisconsin Elections Commission on Monday, asserting that they have exceeded the required 6,850 signatures from voters within Vos' southeast Wisconsin district. “With over 10,000 signatures on our recall petition, they’ve spoken unequivocally: they are weary of the existing situation and demand new representation,” said Matt Snorek, the initiator of the campaign, in a released statement.

Vos' Response

Vos has labeled the recall endeavor as a squandering of time and resources, reiterating his stance in a statement on Sunday. He has raised doubts about the group's methods and the legitimacy of the signatures, pledging that a team he had assembled would "scrutinize each individual signature.”

Trump's Supporters' Frustration

The attempt to recall him underscores the ongoing dissatisfaction among Trump’s supporters in the pivotal state of Wisconsin regarding his defeat in the 2020 election and Vos' handling of the situation. This encompasses Vos' refusal to entertain efforts from Trump and his backers to invalidate Biden’s victory and his decision not to proceed with the impeachment of Wisconsin’s top elections official.

2020 Election Results

While Trump narrowly secured victory in Wisconsin in 2016, he faced a loss to President Joe Biden by a similar margin of approximately 21,000 votes in 2020. The outcome has withstood two partial recounts, numerous legal actions, an independent audit, and a review by a conservative law firm.

Wisconsin Supreme Court's Decision

The announcement of the recall campaign on Sunday follows the Wisconsin Supreme Court's refusal on Friday to address Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' plea to clarify whether Wisconsin's new legislative district maps are applicable to elections before November. This has resulted in uncertainty about the collection of signatures for the recall attempt in Vos' new district.
