El Chapo Complains of Lack of Communication with Family in US Maximum Security Prison

Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán complains of inability to communicate with family in US maximum security prison, claiming discrimination.

Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the former leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado, has lamented the lack of communication with his family. Guzmán expressed his distress in a letter to District Court Judge Brian M. Cogan in the Eastern District of New York, stating that he has been unable to speak with his twin daughters for the past seven months. He claimed that the facility stopped allowing him to have calls with his daughters since May 2023 and that his requests for communication have been met with silence from the FBI agent who monitors the calls.

Appeal for Visits

Furthermore, Guzmán requested the judge to authorize a visit from his wife, Emma Coronel, as his daughters can only visit during school breaks while studying in Mexico. However, Judge Cogan responded that he has no authority to intervene in the arrangements made by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

In his response, Cogan emphasized that the Bureau of Prisons is solely responsible for Guzmán's confinement after his conviction and that the judge cannot alter the conditions. Therefore, he denied Guzmán's request for intervention.

Family Tragedy

The letters submitted by both Guzmán and the judge have been included in the public case file. Notably, Guzmán's 95-year-old mother passed away in December in Mexico's northern state of Sinaloa without seeing her son since his transfer to the Colorado prison.

Legal Battles and Extradition

Guzmán, notorious for his escape from Mexican prisons, faced a three-month trial in New York, during which grim accounts of killings, political corruption, and elaborate drug smuggling methods were brought to light. Additionally, there is a possibility that Guzmán may encounter his son in prison. In 2023, Mexico extradited one of his sons, Ovidio Guzmán López, to the United States to face drug trafficking and money laundering charges. Ovidio Guzmán is believed to have been involved in leading the Sinaloa cartel's operations in producing and exporting fentanyl to the United States.
