Electrolux Group Urges Consumers to Stop Using Recalled Frigidaire and Kenmore Electric Ranges

Electrolux Group recalls older Frigidaire and Kenmore electric ranges due to fire and burn hazards, offering repairs or compensation for affected consumers.

Electrolux Group has issued a safety alert urging consumers to discontinue the use of older model Frigidaire and Kenmore electric ranges due to recent reports indicating that these appliances pose fire hazards and burn risks. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a notice on Thursday, cautioning that the heating elements on the affected ranges, dating back to 2009, have been observed to turn on spontaneously, fail to switch off when manually turned off, and heat to temperatures different from those selected. These factors contribute to the potential for fires and burn injuries.

Around 203,000 ranges are impacted by the recall, including Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional, and Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges, which were retailed in various colors such as white, bisque, black, and stainless steel. These models feature rear panel rotary knobs and digital displays. The affected ranges were distributed nationwide between June 2001 and August 2009 through Sears and independent appliance stores, and were initially recalled in 2009.

Incident Reports

Since the recall, there have been approximately 212 complaints lodged, including 14 reports of fires and eight incidents of burn injuries to the hands or arms, as well as cases of smoke inhalation.

Remedy

Electrolux will arrange a free inspection and repair for affected ranges that are deemed repairable. In cases where repair is not feasible, consumers will receive a $50 electronic gift card along with reimbursement of up to $60 for haul-away fees, upon furnishing proof of purchase for a new range and haul-away services.

Consumer Advisory

The CPSC advises consumers with impacted ranges to ensure that no items are left on the ranges, even when not in use.
