European Union Regulators Seek Details from TikTok on New 'TikTok Lite' App
EU seeks details from TikTok about TikTok Lite app in France and Spain, including risk assessment and impact on minors and users' mental health.
European Union regulators have initiated an inquiry into the newly released TikTok Lite app, which compensates users for viewing videos. The European Commission has formally requested information from TikTok, seeking details regarding the risk assessment conducted prior to the app’s introduction in France and Spain. This move is in accordance with the Digital Services Act, a comprehensive legislative framework aimed at enhancing oversight of social media platforms.
Response from TikTok
TikTok has acknowledged the Commission's request for information and has assured that they will cooperate by providing the necessary details. The platform emphasizes that it has been in direct communication with the Commission regarding the TikTok Lite app, indicating a willingness to engage in the regulatory process.
Features of TikTok Lite
TikTok Lite, a streamlined version of the main platform, enables users to accumulate points by engaging in activities such as video watching, content liking, and following creators. These points can be exchanged for rewards, including Amazon vouchers and PayPal gift cards. Notably, the rewards are exclusive to users aged 18 and above, with mandatory age verification. Moreover, users can earn rewards amounting to a maximum of one euro ($1.06) per day by watching videos for up to one hour.
Regulatory Deadline
TikTok has been given a deadline of 24 hours to submit the risk assessment report to the European Commission. The assessment is expected to address concerns related to the app's potential impact on the well-being of minors and users' mental health, particularly in terms of the likelihood of fostering addictive behavior. Additionally, TikTok has until April 26 to furnish further details on the measures implemented to mitigate these systemic risks.
