Export restrictions impact ASML's shipment of chipmaking tools to China
The Dutch government has imposed restrictions on ASML, a key player in the production of advanced semiconductors, prohibiting the export of some of its critical chipmaking tools to China. ASML revealed that the Dutch government recently revoked a portion of the shipment license for its lithography systems NXT:2050i and NXT:2100i, resulting in a 1% decline in the company's shares.
ASML's lithography machines, including extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems, are crucial in chip manufacturing. While ASML has been unable to export the EUV machine to China for years, the recent revocation specifically affects the DUV lithography machines. This move follows heightened export controls by the U.S. government on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking tools to China in October, prompting the Dutch government to implement its own restrictions in June.
ASML stated that it does not anticipate a significant impact on its 2023 financial outlook due to the revoked export license and updated U.S. export controls on certain DUV lithography systems. Despite ASML's expectation of fourth quarter net sales between 6.7 billion euros ($7.4 billion) and 7.1 billion euros, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not be reached for immediate comment.
