Fallen NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller Honored in Emotional Funeral Service
NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller honored at funeral by family, friends, and NYPD leaders for his bravery and sacrifice.
On Saturday, family, friends, and fellow officers gathered to honor the life of New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Jonathan Diller. The funeral took place at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where a sea of blue uniforms filled the church and its surroundings to pay their respects to the fallen hero.
A Heartfelt Tribute
Diller’s widow, Stephanie Diller, delivered a moving eulogy during the funeral mass. She expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from the public and talked about how Jonathan had always been a hero to her and their son, Ryan. Stephanie emotionally demanded change, questioning the need for more sacrifices before true protection is provided to police officers and their families.
She concluded her emotional tribute by expressing her hope to reunite with Jonathan in the afterlife, reminiscing about the day they got married.
Honoring a Hero
New York City Mayor Eric Adams praised Diller as a hero, emphasizing his bravery during the final moments of his life. Despite being shot, Diller fought back and disarmed his assailant, displaying exceptional courage in the face of danger.
The NYPD Commissioner, Edward Caban, posthumously promoted Diller to the rank of detective as a tribute to his legacy. Diller was also honored with a new badge number, 110, which holds special significance as it coincides with his son Ryan's birthday.
Paying Respects
Patrick Hendry, the president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, paid tribute to Diller and denounced the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting. The funeral service concluded with the hymn "Lift High the Cross" as Diller's casket was solemnly carried out of the church.
Tragic Loss and Legal Proceedings
The fatal incident occurred during a routine traffic stop in Queens, where Diller and his partner encountered the suspect, Guy Rivera, who had a history of 21 prior arrests. Rivera allegedly shot Diller in the stomach before opening fire on both officers, leading to the tragic loss of Diller's life.
Lindy Jones, another individual present during the fatal encounter, also faced charges related to the incident, including criminal possession of a weapon and defacing a weapon.
