The race took place in Diyatalawa, a town located in the central hills of Sri Lanka, approximately 180 kilometers (110 miles) east of the capital, Colombo. Thousands of spectators were present at the event, witnessing the terrible turn of events unfold before their eyes.

Cause of the Mishap

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident. According to police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa, one of the cars unexpectedly swerved off the track, resulting in the devastating collision with the spectators and event officials. The incident claimed the lives of seven individuals, including four event officials, while leaving 20 others injured. Tragically, three of the injured individuals are reported to be in critical condition.

Investigation and Response

The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, which occurred during the 17th race out of the 24 events scheduled. Following the tragedy, the race was immediately suspended.

The race had drawn in an estimated 45,000 spectators at the Sri Lankan military academy circuit. The event was co-organized by the Sri Lankan army and Sri Lanka Automobile Sports.
