FBI Offers $10,000 Reward for Information on New Mexico Wildfire Arson

FBI offers $10,000 reward for info on New Mexico wildfires that killed 2, destroyed homes. Recovery efforts underway.

Following the devastating twin wildfires near Ruidoso, New Mexico, the FBI is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects responsible for starting the fires. The fires, known as the South Fork and Salt Fires, resulted in the loss of two lives and the destruction or damage of hundreds of structures. These tragic events have had a significant impact on the community and have forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.

Fire Damage and Recovery Efforts

The South Fork and Salt Fires, which were discovered on June 17, caused extensive damage to the area. Lincoln County Manager Randall Camp reported that nearly a thousand homes have been lost due to the fires. In response to the disaster, President Joe Biden has issued a disaster declaration for parts of southern New Mexico, freeing up funding and additional resources to support the recovery efforts. This includes assistance such as temporary housing, low-cost loans for uninsured property, and emergency work in the affected areas.

Current Firefighting Efforts

Over 1,100 firefighters are currently battling the flames in steep and rocky terrain. The National Interagency Fire Center provided updates on the containment progress, stating that the South Fork Fire, covering 26 square miles, was 31% contained as of Sunday. Meanwhile, the Salt Fire, spreading over 12 square miles, has reached 7% containment. However, full containment of the fires is not expected until July 15.

Ongoing Risks and Challenges

Despite the efforts of the firefighting teams, the area continues to face significant risks. Downed power lines, damaged water, sewer, and gas lines, as well as the threat of flash floods, pose ongoing challenges to both the firefighters and the public. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, along with FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell, visited the disaster area to assess the situation and provide support.

Long-Term Recovery

Looking ahead, Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford has estimated that the area may require up to five years to fully recover from the impact of the wildfires. Despite the assistance from both federal and state agencies, the road to recovery is expected to be long and challenging for the affected community.

Our thoughts are with the residents of Ruidoso and all those affected by the wildfires. We hope for the swift containment of the fires and a successful recovery for the community.
