FBI Renewed Search for Suspect in 2021 Pipe Bombs near RNC and DNC With New Video

Almost four years after two pipe bombs were placed near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C., the FBI is ramping up its efforts to locate a suspect by releasing new video footage of the individual placing one of the bombs near the DNC.

FBI's Renewed Efforts and Public Appeal

The FBI, which currently has no identified suspects and has yet to establish a motive for the attacks, revealed on Thursday that it estimates the suspect to be approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall. As an incentive for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, a reward of up to $500,000 is being offered.

Congressional Concerns

The announcement coincided with a report released by congressional Republicans, expressing concern over the FBI's inability to identify a suspect thus far. The interim staff report from the House Administration and Judiciary committees criticized the FBI for not providing additional information about potential investigative leads.

Tensions on January 5, 2021

The pipe bombs were placed in a Capitol Hill neighborhood near the RNC and the DNC on January 5, 2021, between approximately 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. the evening before the riot at the Capitol. The FBI later confirmed that the dismantled pipe bombs were operational devices capable of causing significant harm to innocent bystanders.

Extensive Investigative Efforts

David Sundberg, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's Washington field office, disclosed that agents, analysts, and data scientists have undertaken extensive efforts, including visits to over 1,200 residences and businesses, conducting more than 1,000 interviews, reviewing approximately 39,000 video files, and evaluating more than 600 tips regarding the identity of the individual responsible for the pipe bombs.

Key Clue: The Suspect's Footwear

One crucial piece of evidence in the investigation is the suspect's footwear, specifically Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a gold logo. These distinctive shoes are considered a significant lead for authorities.

Challenges in Identifying the Suspect

Sundberg cited several factors hampering the identification of the suspect. The incident occurred in January during the pandemic, and the suspect was seen wearing a hood, gloves, and a mask. At that time, such attire was common due to both the weather and COVID-19 precautions, making it challenging for witnesses to recognize the suspect.

Appeal to the Public for Information

In light of the ongoing investigation, Sundberg expressed the belief that a member of the public may possess information about the individual who placed the bombs, and he urged anyone with such knowledge to come forward. The FBI is particularly interested in receiving information related to potential suspects, including biographical details, contact information, demographic information, proximity to Washington, D.C. in early January 2021, and access to pipe bomb components.
